ONE OF MY ENCOUNTERS

It sounds strange that I admit to using a Ouija board when I advise others to avoid them. The fact is I did not know then what I know now. Do I still use a Ouija board? Sometimes, when there is no other choice. There are ways of protecting yourself but why do something that requires protection. Truthfully, when dealing with human spirits, massive chaos and few answers, you have to do whatever it takes. Sometimes that means using a Ouija board. In one case, we knew we were dealing with human spirits and they were creating a terrible situation for one family. The activity taking place was attention getting type of phenomena. There was nothing malicious, nothing damaging. The spirits simply wanted us to know they were there. This case was well into its second year and frankly, I was running out of suggestions. We had tried getting EVP and we were getting a lot of it but it made no sense. At one point, I told the spirits that I would force them out unless they told us what they wanted. When I played the tape back, you could hear loud and clear their reaction to my threat. "You bastard." We often heard the word "money" but nothing explaining what that meant. My partner at the time suggested we try the Ouija board.

At first I thought it was a bad idea. She suggested I think on it and decide later. I looked at everything we had already done. We had pretty much run the gamut. Finally I decided to give it a try. Our sessions were incredibly long, usually running up to five hours. We established communication with the spirits. They talked about a lot of things. They also mentioned the word "money" but as with the EVP's, there was no explanation. It would be two years after the case ended that we would find out what they meant. Now of course, we did not always connect with the two spirits. Opportunistic spirits occasionally popped in for some fun. We could tell by the way the planchette moved whether we were talking to our spirits. There was a certain smoothness to the planchette when we talked to them. Another tip off was how the sessions started. I mentioned in the introduction that I would add one word to the board to save time. That word would be "asshole." Whenever another spirit started talking to us and we rebuked them, they would always use that term. We would start the session and on many occasions, the board would spell out: "Hi asshole."

We were able to find out who was active in the house. It turned out to be the family's mother and uncle. The uncle was staying around partly because his sister was and partly because he was waiting for his severely ill wife to join him. One night after nearly six hours working with the board, we convinced the uncle to cross over by saying he could set things up for his wife so everything would be perfect when she passes away. This was a spirit rescue and when it was over, there was a palpable change in the atmosphere. Now we had the mother to deal with. She kept mentioning money but never explained what she meant. The family was self-employed and quite successfully. They liked to make an occasional trip to a local casino so we thought maybe their mother was displeased. When we asked her, she never really said anything about the trips. Our task was to convince her that what she was doing in the house was really upsetting her family. She was as stubborn in death as she was in life. It took many sessions to finally convince her to ease up. She agreed to back off and indeed she did. With the uncle at peace and the mother easing up, we were no longer needed. We stayed in contact with the family. In fact we had worked the case so long we had become family.

Ouija stories rarely have a happy ending. This was a one in a million shot. As I grow older and hear more stories and handle more cases, I'm finding a change within myself. No longer do I see the Ouija board as potentially harmless. My strongest advice is to avoid it at all costs.
