UNINVITED GUESTS

Frank B. was not a big user of Ouija boards. He had bought one many years ago but rarely used it. In the few times where he did use it, nothing of significance ever happened. One night he had some friends over and somehow the conversation turned to the subject of Ouija boards. Frank mentioned that he had one and his friends suggested he take it out and use it. His friends cleared off a table while Frank dug it out of his closet. He set up the board and he and his friends began asking questions. Very little came out of the session. Most of it was gibberish and no one took the session seriously. At one point, the board spelled out "We are here" but when they asked who, they got more gibberish. After an hour or so, they ended the session.

The following day, I received a call from Frank. We talked for a few minutes about general paranormal things. Basically I think Frank wanted to know whether I was qualified to help him. I guess he was satisfied with my answers because he opened up to me about his problem. I will let Frank tell you his story. "Well, my friends and I used a Ouija board last night. Now this may sound crazy but while we were using it, I felt this sense of a presence. Does that make any sense to you?" I assured him it did and he continued on with his story. "I remember shuddering at one point. I think it was when it spelled out we are here. I don't know why but it made me feel kind of creepy. Anyway, I put the board away and went back to my friends. They left around 10 p.m. and I got ready for bed. I decided to read a little before I went to sleep. I couldn't shake this weird feeling that I wasn't alone. Did you ever feel that?" I told Frank that I often felt like that and in my line of work, you become in tuned to that. I feel it on cases and I often feel it at home as well. It's the nature of the beast. Frank continued his story.

"Well, I guess it was around eleven when I decided to try to sleep. I turned off the light on my bed stand and rolled over on my left side. Suddenly, I felt the bed depress as if someone had just sat down. Man, that freaked me out. I immediately turned on the light but there was nothing there and there were no depressions or anything like that on the bed. I chided myself for freaking myself out and turned the light off. I fell asleep soon after. When I woke up in the morning, I had forgotten about the whole thing. I took a shower and went into the kitchen to make some coffee. I almost dropped dead when I saw the Ouija board on the table. I knew I had put the board away. Then i got to thinking that maybe one of my friends took it out before they left as a joke or something. I told myself I would call them later and ask but by the time I got to work and saw the mess waiting for me, I totally forgot about the whole thing. I had a grueling day at work and I was exhausted when I got home. I watched a little TV and actually fell asleep on the couch. I woke up around two in the morning and staggered into bed. I shut off the light and rolled over. I was just about to fall asleep when I heard a sound in the kitchen. To be honest, I was too tired to care so I let myself fall asleep. When I got up the next morning, I took my shower and went into the kitchen. I found my whole can of coffee on the floor. The top must have come off because there was coffee everywhere. I didn't know what to think."

Frank talked a little more but that was the worst of it. To be honest, I wasn't sure whether Frank really had a problem or not. the only thing that really stuck out was the board being on the table. Frank told me he never did call his friends about that. Listening to him, I was certain that Frank was sincere. In this field, one of the drawbacks is people often make up stories. Sometimes I will get a call and someone will start telling me about all kind of things and you can hear people snickering in the background. The prank calls annoy the hell out of me. I knew this was no prank call. I told Frank to say the St. Michael the Archangel prayer before he went to bed. It was probably overkill but he needed something. I asked him to call me if anything else transpired. Several days passed without a call so I figured everything was okay with Frank. It is really easy to spook yourself. I knew that from experience. I pretty much wrote this case off as just that. However, a few days later, Frank called again.

"That damn board did it again," he started. "I put it away and found it on the table the next morning. Now doors open and close by themselves, forget coffee, I always find it on the floor, even when I put it in the fridge. And another thing, something sat on the bed again and I could also hear footsteps in the hallway. What the hell do I do? I can't get any sleep." I tried to reassure Frank that while his situation was certainly frightening, it did not appear to be threatening in any way. Mischievous yes but not threatening. I told Frank what I often tell others. For openers, give it as little recognition as possible. Spirits often feed off our emotions and fear is a high calorie meal for them. I explained that it appeared he may have opened a door when he used the board that night. The trick now was to close it, after he got rid of his unwanted guests, that is. My advice to him was to do the following: Get rid of the board, tell the spirits in no uncertain terms that any invitation they were given when he used the board was now revoked and tell them they must leave in Christ's name. There was no reason to believe anything demonic was involved and I was pretty sure he could stop the situation himself. Frank sounded hesitant but I explained to him that since he was dealing with human entities, the likelihood was this would do the trick. It sounds simplistic, I know but often with human spirits, simplistic works. A little righteous indignation can go a long way. It doesn't take complicated rituals to force out human spirits unless you believe they are evil. Then it becomes more complicated.

Frank did as suggested and fortunately, it worked. I have talked to him a few times since and all has been quiet. I am sure it will stay that way. This case, while easily solved, should serve as an example. When you use any means of divination, you are opening a door. Most of the time, it won't result in much trouble but you never know what is coming in through that door. It may be an opportunistic spirit looking for some attention or it could be something worse. I have seen that happen many times. Frank was lucky and unlucky. The unlucky part is that something did come through the door. The lucky part was that it was a human spirit or two who were looking for attention. When told to go, they did so. However, that is not always the case. You just never know what is floating around out there.
